Location: Bethel Township, PA
Fire Department: Bethel Township Hose Company
Assisting Organization: Booths Corner Farmers Market
Our team completed and published a pre-incident plan for this 1000 square foot farmers market in Bethel Township, PA. The published pre-plan was followed by a training event for the township fire department and their mutual aid, ensuring all members were able to walk through the occupancy, understood the application of the pre-plan, and understood the hazards associated with the occupancy.
FIRE DEPARTMENT CHALLENGES
Extensive stretches with no standpipe connections
90% of the occupancy lacks a fire sprinkler system
Complex layout with an extensive void spaces and mezzanines above shops
OUR SOLUTIONS
Provide responders with a clear and consice layout of the occupancy.
Define the hoseline stretch distances to the farthest fire/smoke compartment doors.
Identify store numbers for assistance in locating stores white responding or operating.
Define the difference in roof structure and labeling of the rooftop units
Our team worked with property management to provide 65 responders walkthrough of this occupancy.
In the event of a future emergency response, responders will have the ability to access the Structural Pre-Plan while en route, and at the command post during operations.
TRAINING EVENT
65 Firefighters from 5 companies on the box alarm to this occupancy gathered under one roof to walk through the building with the structural pre-plan in hand, developing an understanding of the associated hazards, the layout of the occupancy, and providing suggestions for the pre-incident plan.
After the walk-through, lines were stretched to understand the stretch estimate on the pre-incident plan, providing firefighters with confidence in the event of a fire.
RESPONDER SAFETY
A concern that was shared amongst responders, especially after our training event, was the location of operating crews and trapped occupants in the event of a fire.
Pur team drafted a request on behalf of the fire department to establish a labeling system of the individual stores within the market.
The property has agreed to this request, and will be installing reflective labels to designate the individual store numbers, enhancing responder safety.
